Deep Cleaning For Decks and Patios Necessary After Harsh Winter

Deep Cleaning For Decks and Patios Necessary After Harsh Winter

As the winter of 2014 drags on into March, many in the US and especially in the Northeast are looking forward to lazy summer days, family BBQs and relaxing on our decks. But this winter will be leaving behind some nasty reminders of what we dealt with and it is time to start planning on erasing those reminders before the damage can set in.

Because of the enormous amounts of snow and ice, both Nassau and Suffolk counties have used up almost all of their supplies of sand and rock salt. In some cases, towns in both counties have had to ask for and received additional quantities of these materials from state supplies. Others have relied on pickle brine and other, more environmentally safer compounds to prevent ice or to help remove ice and the dangers it brings. The one thing that sand, rock salt, pickle brine and other ice melting compounds have in common is their residue sticks to our boots and shoes. And as day follows night, as we enter the warm confines of our homes and offices we bring that residue along with us. Anywhere that we have wooden decking or porches or cement or paver based patios and walkways, the residue can and will infiltrate the porous surfaces of all these materials with potentially disastrous results.

While sand is more of a nuisance in terms of cleanliness, rock salt and brine contain chemicals and compounds that not only melt ice but also can damage decks, porches and walkways made of cement, pavers and wood. In terms of cement and pavers, the evidence of the damage is seen in disintegrating surfaces, cracks and discoloration. For wooden surfaces the damage can be worse and even dangerous. As wood breaks down it will also crack but splinters are also possible. For those of who like to walk barefoot in the warmer months, especially children, the pain and potential injuries or infections that can occur from splinters are serious.

Many homeowners with DIY sensibilities will purchase power washers and cleaning materials and can do a very good job in cleaning their outdoor surfaces. Professional power washing companies not only have experience and knowledge in terms of doing a thorough cleaning but they also have access to professional grade equipment and cleaners (many environmentally friendly and only available to those in the trade) that will ensure a job done right. And isn’t peace of mind the best thing to have when enjoying the warm summer months.
