Gutters and Arteries, A Tale of Two Blockages

Gutters and Arteries, A Tale of Two Blockages

At first it is unnoticeable but the dangers are lurking.  The buildup along the pathway where the vital flow passes is slight at first.  Unchecked and untreated, the problem grows.  The path by which the flow passes starts to narrow and soon the vital flow slows to a trickle.  Left untreated and the blockage will eventually narrow the pathway to a trickle and serious health risks move from being a possibility to a reality.  Next is a heart attack.

gutter-cleaningNow, the opening paragraph sounds like a simplified description of the clogging of the arteries and in a very simplified term they are.  But for the purposes of this post they are describing the blockage of your homes gutters and when they get totally clogged and the rainwater that they are supposed to be safely moving away from your house starts to overflow you will find your heart pounding and wondering if you are suffering an attack.

Clogged gutters are not only a nuisance but a potentially damaging situation for the health of your home and its appearance.  During periods of heavy rain or when massive snow accumulations on the roof of your home begin to melt, the goal is to get the water off the roofs and away from your house quickly and neatly.  Clogged gutters will overflow and along with having water drip down on you, your family and your visitors as they enter and exit the house, the dangers that are involved are costly and can be a health risk.

When the water has not where to go it not only drips over the side and falls where you would rather it does not but it will also flow between the gutter and the fascia board it is attached to.  Along with attacking the wooden fascia, the overflowing water will also get into the area between the fascia and the eaves of the house.  This water will cause deterioration of the wood which in turn will become a breeding ground for mold and mildew.  As this mold and mildew will develop in areas normally unseen by the human and eye and rarely inspected, these toxic organisms will grow and thrive, feeding off both the continued presence of moisture that the clogged gutters will provide as well as the heat of the interior of the home.

As the attics and eaves of the home can get extremely hot due to exposure to the sun, the atmosphere for mold and mildew growth will be optimum and when both of these are allowed to go unchecked the health of your family is at risk.  A simple search of the internet for mold-related health issues should be enough to give any homeowner pause.  So just as ensuring the health of your arteries is at its best through regular check-ups, so does ensuring the health of your house and family by having your gutters inspected and cleaned regularly.
